The preparation of Oil Grounds as done the traditional way is an art in itself, and a well prepared ground forms a fundamental component of canvas preparation for an oil painting … get it wrong and the surface will be thirsty and brittle … get it right and a stable painting layer is achieved, which takes effortlessly to brush strokes and ensures an oil painting which has longevity.

We were fortunate to get some additional training from Artist and Alchemist Rinus van Niekerk (who interestingly studied under Odd Nerdum in Norway). Mixing and applying his tried and tested ingredients, the methodology creates a sticky paste which once applied on a stretched and sized canvas, renders a wonderfully smooth surface, but still holds the characteristic linen weave
