Recent experiments with cloth density and ground layers, has given telling results under magnification. For example, 340g Cotton Duck with standard 2 coats Acrylic Primer reveals a rough or ‘toothy’ finish, with prominent cotton fibres. The same material prepared with an acrylic size or glue coat, before applying primer layers, gives a much smoother finish. Absorbency is also greatly reduced. For artists working in oil paints, it is advised to seal the canvas first in this manner, protecting the natural fibers and providing a surface which takes the paint effortlessly. Encouraging results as work continues in this area.
